Investigation Underway After Attack on Police

On Thursday afternoon (18124), police officers in Herzogenrath responded to an attempted robbery at a gas station in Merkstein. During the incident, the suspect attacked the officers.
According to police, the suspect entered the gas station and threatened employees with a knife, demanding cash. The employees resisted, and a struggle ensued between them and the suspect.
As responding officers arrived at the scene, the suspect turned on them and assaulted them. The officers were able to subdue and arrest the suspect, but not before one officer sustained minor injuries.
The injured officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The suspect, a 25-year-old male from Herzogenrath, is currently in police custody and faces charges of attempted robbery and assault on law enforcement officers.
