The Hunger Games movie franchise is expanding with a prequel film called The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Arriving eight years after the most recent film in the franchise, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set in the years leading up to the events of the original trilogy. The film will follow a young Coriolanus Snow, who will one day become the tyrannical President of Panem.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins, which was released in 2020. The novel tells the story of Snow's early life and his rise to power. It is a prequel to the original Hunger Games trilogy, which is set in a dystopian future where the nation of Panem is ruled by a totalitarian government. Each year, the government forces children from the twelve districts of Panem to compete in the Hunger Games, a televised battle to the death.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set sixty-four years before the events of the original Hunger Games trilogy. At this time, Snow is an eighteen-year-old student at the Academy, a prestigious school for the children of the elite. He is chosen to be a mentor for one of the tributes in the tenth annual Hunger Games. His tribute is a young girl from District 12 named Lucy Gray Baird. Snow and Lucy Gray form a bond, but their relationship is tested by the harsh realities of the Hunger Games.
