Cicadas 2024 Map Illinois

Cicadas to Swarm Illinois in 2024

Two Broods Expected to Emerge in Dual Explosion

Map Reveals Expected Locations

A map released by the College of Agricultural Consumer and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois provides a glimpse of where to expect cicadas to emerge in the state in 2024. Brood XIII and Brood XIX are expected to appear in the Midwest and Southeast, marking their first dual emergence since 1803.

The map indicates that at least one of the two broods is likely to emerge in most parts of Illinois, including the Chicago area. However, in a narrow section of the state, both broods could emerge simultaneously.

The emergence of cicadas, which occurs once every 13 or 17 years, is a natural phenomenon that can have significant ecological and economic impacts. Cicadas feed on plant roots and can cause damage to vegetation. Their loud, continuous singing can also be a nuisance to humans.
